Playground on a rooftop

Kindergarten Playground on a Flat Roof

Playing Above the City Skyline

Rooftop playgrounds are becoming increasingly important in densely populated urban areas. However, every rooftop comes with unique requirements regarding planning, installation and safety.

This reference project demonstrates how customized planning, technical expertise and tailored net solutions helped create a safe, durable and attractive play environment on a flat roof.

When open space becomes scarce, new play spaces emerge in unexpected places. One example is this kindergarten playground located on the flat roof of a fully redeveloped office complex on the 4th floor.

The project demonstrates how rooftop areas can successfully be transformed into spaces for play and movement in densely populated urban environments – and highlights the unique challenges such projects involve.

The Challenge

Rooftop playgrounds differ significantly from conventional ground-level installations. Numerous technical requirements had to be considered from the very beginning of the planning process.

Key factors included:

  • the building's load-bearing capacity
  • the design of the surfacing system
  • the customized installation of the playground equipment
  • the protection of the roof membrane from mechanical stress
  • the safety and enclosure of the entire play area

As drilling and welding were not permitted on the roof structure, the entire solution had to be specifically adapted to the building's structural conditions.

The HUCK Solution

Working closely with all project partners, HUCK developed a customized solution for the rooftop area.

In addition to the play and movement elements, a specially designed ball-stop and safety net system was integrated into the project. The net structure secures the play area and was precisely tailored to the site's specific requirements.

Experience gained from numerous comparable rooftop playground projects was incorporated into the planning process from an early stage. This allowed technical challenges to be identified early and enabled the development of a durable and cost-effective solution.

The Result

The result is an attractive space for movement and play – in a location where one might not expect it.

The playground offers a variety of opportunities for active play while demonstrating how rooftop areas can be used effectively to create valuable recreational and play spaces.

This project proves that successful play environments are never off-the-shelf solutions. They are the result of customized planning, technical expertise and close collaboration between all project stakeholders.
